A factory outside Hamburg produces the world’s best-selling anatomical skeleton—The Standard Skeleton. All copies of the model are made from the same human remains: the bones of an unknown man who has been stored behind a steel door in the factory for decades. Who is this man, still haunting classrooms and hospitals around the world today? The search for answers leads to the violent history of anatomy and to Polish forced laborers during the Nazi era. What really is a human standard, and how does it shape our understanding of ourselves?
