In the salt-mining town of Katwe, Uganda, the factory shut down 40 years ago. Despite politicians’ promises, nothing has changed. Corruption runs deep, and the income from salt extraction—now done entirely by hand—disappears into the pockets of greedy middlemen, and workers struggle to survive. Among them is Abooki, a mother laboring in the salt lake to support her three daughters. In this visually stunning film, salt becomes both a symbol of life and of daily hardship.
