Direct Action depicts the French movement ZAD (Zone à Défendre / Zone to Defend), whose protests and alternative lifestyle have led them to be labeled as eco-terrorists. The movement is characterized by self-organized communities striving for autonomy and sustainability, with projects such as bakeries, farms, and radio stations. With a slow pace and breathtaking cinematography, the film follows life in ZAD de Notre-Dame-des-Landes, the movement’s heart and the epicenter of its clashes with the police. The tranquil rhythm of everyday life sharply contrasts with the violence it encounters.
