Rapeflower is a solo performance in which Japanese-Polish dancer Hana Umeda embodies a personal yet universal experience of sexual violence—one of the most transcultural phenomena, shared by women regardless of ethnic identity or geographical location. She also exposes the historical vulnerability embedded in the traditional Japanese dance form jiutamai, in which female practitioners were long confined to salons in entertainment districts rather than the stage. Hana Umeda approaches sexual violence as a weapon used to control women’s bodies. In a striking fusion of traditional Japanese jiutamai and contemporary performance, she portrays rape as a psychosomatic condition shaped by trauma, survival strategies, and the possibility of a new beginning. Umeda leads the audience on an emotional journey through her own body—a site of injury and objectification, but also of liberation, self-determined exploration, and resistance. The performance is presented in collaboration with Teater Konträr.
